Let's Take a Look at Literacy!

This week's topic of discussion focuses on the importance of literacy - more importantly, strategies to support learners struggling with literacy. Below, you will find a step-by-step plan of action to target literacy issues within a local high school in the Halton Catholic District School Board. In combination of the Literacy Proposal, important statistics at the school, school board, and provincial level will be outlined in order to frame our understanding of student success with the OSSLT.

The OSSLT is a graduation requirement throughout the province of Ontario, and other provinces across the country. As educators, we want all of our students to succeed so, it's crucial we take time to draft and implement a plan to help them find the strategies that work best for them in order to be successful on the OSSLT and in all aspects of literacy.

Oh STA... while I am a graduate of the HDSB, I used to drive past STA every Sunday growing up. That place was run down and I never understood because it is so close to the Lakeshore, but it also is around an area where there is lower income - more so in the 90s than now, but those demographics are still there. I really found it interesting how high the percentage of students at STA speaking another first language at home. Oakville's demographics are certainly continually changing and with that the schools in HCDSB and HDSB need to address these areas. Like Upper Grand, it is interesting to note that Halton Catholic also reports higher success rates than the province. Again, something to be proud of, but also remaining aware and vigilant that more does need to be done. Your plan is thorough and really breaks down the areas that STA should focus on in supporting and preparing students for a successful OSSLT result. I especially like the two-part student survey; it really is important that students have a voice and remain accountable in their learning. Take ownership of your literacy! What a novel concept right?
Thanks for all the interesting data, the plan and how to implement - I'm sure STA would find it really useful!

Fun fact - I'm actually transferring to STA in September! I'm very excited/nervous about the switch from teaching adults to teens but overall I'm thrilled to be back in a traditional classroom / schedule :) Thanks for your feedback, I couldn't agree more with the observations of STA and Oakville in general, it's a growing and constantly changing demographic for sure, and this creates numerous implications for literacy especially at a school like STA where a large number of students speak another language at home. I'm excited to see how literacy is handled first hand come the next school year!
